Homework

Homework has been proven to have a significant impact on pupil progress and also in enhancing the development of pupils’ organisation, time management and independence. To support pupils in managing these expectations and becoming more confident in their own learning our homework timetables published below. The timetables ensure that, if pupils complete work on the day it is set, they will have no more than two pieces per night and will help them get into a more consistent routine.

All homework is set via ClassCharts which ensures that both parents and students know exactly what they need to complete and when. A balance of social time and home learning is really key to personal development and well-being so time scales for completing homework have been standardised.

Our homework club runs every day from 3.30-4.30 in the school library. In addition to providing an appropriate work space, staff and older pupils are there to assist in the completion of any work. If your child is struggling to fulfill homework expectations please encourage them to attend these valuable support sessions.

Key Stage 3

  • Homework should take 20-30 minutes per subject. If your child has focused for that period of time, please encourage them to hand in what they have done explaining to the teacher that they have spent the appropriate amount of time on it.
  • All homework will be set in accordance to the timetables below and pupils will have one week to complete it.
  • Homework will sometimes be set on a day when they don’t have that subject, however everything they need will be on Classcharts.

 Key stage 4

  • At Key stage 4 pupils we encourage and guide pupils to organise their time themselves as it is excellent preparation for the next phase of their lives. This is supported through work we do in tutor time.
  • Pupils will have a maximum of 60 minutes of homework per subject per week. This may be broken into smaller pieces with a minimum two day turn around or as one longer piece, in which case, more time will be allowed.
  • In Year 11, homework is always supporting revision as it is enhancing understanding. Sometimes students worry when they are still expected to complete additional work as opposed to ‘revising’. Students are reassured that all the work they are asked to do will positively impact their outcomes.

Ways that parents/carers can support learning at home:

  • Ensure your child has a quiet space to complete homework or if this is difficult, encourage them to attend Homework club.
  • Look at Classcharts with your child and set aside a time each day for homework to be completed.
  • If it isn’t possible to work one evening, support your child in planning when they will complete those pieces during that week.
  • “Revising” is an incredibly complex word that is used regularly but causes so many problems for students. Encourage your child to create mind maps, flash cards or use a quizlet when revising.

Please contact Mrs Parker, Assistant Head (Curriculum), if you have any further questions.
