Science

“We are all connected to each other, biologically, to the Earth, chemically, and to the rest of the universe, atomically. That’s kinda cool.” – Neil deGrasse Tyson

At Tewkesbury Academy, our dynamic Science Department is dedicated to nurturing these connections. By fostering a love for science and developing curiosity among students, our aim is to transform those who walk the science corridors into inspired learners who think about the world in new and exciting ways. Through our engaging curriculum, we seek to instil a deep appreciation for the scientific method, critical thinking, and the wonders of the natural world via the following means:

1. Inspiring curiosity and wonder

We believe that curiosity is the driving force behind scientific exploration. Our curriculum is designed to spark a sense of wonder and ignite curiosity in our students. We aim to provide captivating learning experiences that encourage questioning, investigation, and experimentation. By connecting scientific concepts to real-life applications and engaging with the latest scientific developments, we will enable our students to appreciate the relevance and beauty of science.

2. Building strong foundations

To ensure academic success and a comprehensive understanding of science, we prioritise building strong foundations. Our curriculum focuses on core scientific principles and concepts, gradually building upon them as students’ progress through the secondary school years. We will emphasise fundamental knowledge, scientific vocabulary, and essential skills that serve as building blocks for further scientific exploration.

3. Developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills and resilience

We believe science education is not solely about acquiring knowledge; it is about developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our curriculum will challenge students to analyse information critically, evaluate evidence, and develop logical reasoning abilities. Through practical experiments, group discussions, and independent research projects, students will learn to approach problems with creativity and develop effective strategies for investigation and analysis. Science is a powerful tool in teaching resilience too, as Claude Lévi-Strauss said: “The scientist is not a person who gives the right answers, rather one who asks the right questions.”

4. Emphasising practical science

We recognise the importance of hands-on practical experiences in understanding scientific concepts fully. Our curriculum will provide numerous opportunities for students to engage in practical science, conducting experiments, making observations, and analysing data. We will encourage students to develop their laboratory skills, fostering a deep understanding of scientific methods and promoting an appreciation for the importance of evidence-based reasoning.

5. Encouraging collaboration and communication

Science is a collaborative endeavour, and effective communication is crucial. We will create a supportive learning environment that encourages teamwork, collaboration, and open discussion. Students will engage in group projects, presentations, and debates, enabling them to articulate their scientific ideas confidently. We will also emphasise the importance of clear scientific communication, encouraging students to express their thoughts in written and oral formats.

6. Engaging with real-world contexts

We will connect scientific concepts to real-world contexts, emphasising the relevance of science in everyday life. Our curriculum will incorporate examples and case studies that demonstrate the impact of science on society, the environment, and technological advancements. By exploring the ethical, social, and environmental implications of scientific discoveries, we aim to develop responsible and informed citizens.

7. Promoting inclusivity and differentiated learning

We are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment that meets the diverse needs of our students. Our curriculum will be flexible and differentiated, allowing for individualised learning experiences. We will provide support and enrichment opportunities to ensure that every student can thrive, regardless of their prior attainment. We value diversity and aim to foster an inclusive science community.
