Extra-Curricular Activities

At Tewkesbury Academy, we offer a wide range of activities outside of the classroom for students with varied interests. These can range from musical clubs, pottery, art and drama, reading and gaming clubs and numerous other sporting activities.

Students should discuss attending clubs with their subject teacher first to ensure they are aware of the day, when the club is starting, venue and club start and end time and then discuss attending with parents, in advance. Clear arrangements must be made regarding getting home safely/suitable collection point.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Tewkesbury Academy has been running the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award successfully since 1986.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the world’s leading achievement award for young people.  The award provides a balanced programme of activities that develops the whole person – mind, body and soul – in an environment of social interaction and teamworking.

Doing DofE is a brilliant way for young people to discover just how much they are capable of. It gives them the chance to make new friends, follow their passions, learn new skills, and make a difference within our community. Achieving a DofE Award is a great way to impress employers too. It helps young people to see themselves differently and gain a new level of confidence. The DofE is non-competitive and a powerful way for every young person to build belief in themselves, whatever their background, interests, and abilities.

How it works?

There are three levels of DofE Award – Bronze, Silver, and Gold. To achieve their Award, young people will need to complete four sections – Volunteering, Physical, Skills and the Expedition.

Young people can choose what they would like to do for the first three sections, and we will provide all the guidance and support they need. The Expedition involves spending two days and one night in the countryside in groups of 4 to 7. Staff will be on hand to support the young people whilst out on Expedition, and we provide comprehensive training beforehand to ensure everyone is fully prepared and has the best possible experience.

Next steps

Participants can be between the ages of 14 and 24 and we hope lots of our young people will take this opportunity to get involved with DofE. The scheme is launched in Year 9.

If your child is interested in taking part but the cost might be a barrier, then please do get in touch. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact Tewkesbury Academy’s Award leader Mr Andrew Phillips via [email protected]. The DofE website dofe.org – has a lot of useful information too.
